Well, I finally decided to admit it...I bit off more than I could chew with this project.
Don't worry, it's still going to happen. I am still going to write poems based on and inspired by all of the Best Picture Oscar winners, but I'm going to allow myself a little more room to work.
When I sat down the other day to think about what I had set out to do, I realized that one poem per week was much too ambitious and I had become disillusioned with myself because I had fallen a bit behind. I threw up my hands and said "Forget about it! It's never going to happen."
Then I got to thinking. Instead of giving up on the project (which had received great support at the beginning) I needed to re-frame my own expectations of what the project would be.
So what's the plan now?
I'm going to continue the project, but slow down the pace, allowing myself to focus on one film, one poem, one story for a full month. I see this providing three different benefits:
- More time to read - Before, I was trying to read the novelization for an upcoming film and cram all that reading into one week. By stretching things out, I can still push through the books or stories, but do so in a way where I can enjoy the stories a bit more.
- Watching films more than once - I may start to vary things a bit as I go forward. Some of the films on my list are stories I've never read or seen before. It's hard to capture everything that is important to the story on the first pass. Taking more time with the films and watching them more than once will hopefully allow me to catch more detail than only watching one time.
- Refining the poems - Let's face it, the thing you care about if you're reading this is the poems. You might be inspired to watch the films along with me, but you're here because you want to read what I write. By taking more time on each film, my aim is to provide better poems for you the reader at the end of it all.
